Short flights under 500 miles arrive on time 79.6% of the time, and cross-country flights over 2,000 miles do just as well at 80.0% — but flights in the 500-to-2,000-mile "middle distance" band, the backbone of US domestic travel, are the least reliable, landing on time only 77.5%–78.6% of the time. Is a longer flight more likely to be delayed?

No — and the relationship isn't even close to linear. Grouping over 3,500 US routes with at least 500 flights a year by distance shows on-time performance dipping through the middle of the range and recovering at both the short and long ends:

Average arrival delay follows the same U-shape: 16.3 minutes for short hops, peaking around 16.5 minutes in the middle distances, then dropping to 14.1 minutes for the longest flights.

Why don't the longest flights have the worst delays?

Transcontinental routes tend to be scheduled with more buffer built into the block time, and the aircraft flying them typically complete fewer legs per day — often just one round trip. That leaves less opportunity for a delay earlier in the day to carry into the flight you're on. Airlines also tend to staff their premium long-haul routes with dedicated aircraft and crews, reducing the knock-on effect from a late-arriving plane.

Why do medium and long-haul flights struggle the most?

Routes in the 500-to-2,000-mile range are the workhorses of hub-and-spoke scheduling — the aircraft flying them often complete four to six legs in a single day. A delay on the first flight of the morning has more distance to compound by the time that same airframe reaches your route in the afternoon or evening.
