At five of the eight busiest US airports, the best-performing airline isn't the hub's biggest mainline carrier — it's a regional partner flying the same routes under its brand. SkyWest, Envoy Air, and Republic Airways post better on-time rates than United, American, or Delta's own mainline flights at Denver, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, and Seattle, based on 24 months of US DOT data covering June 2024 through May 2026.

How we picked the best airline at each airport
For each of the eight busiest US airports, FlightRecord compares every airline with at least 500 flights to or from that airport over the trailing 12 months, then ranks them by on-time percentage — the share of flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule, the DOT's own standard. One carrier, Endeavor Air, is left out of the Atlanta and JFK rankings below: a recent DOT reporting change has folded most of its flights into another carrier's code, leaving its current volume too low to rank fairly.
Why a regional partner sometimes beats the mainline carrier
Regional carriers don't sell tickets under their own names — SkyWest, Envoy Air, and Republic Airways fly smaller jets as American Eagle, Delta Connection, United Express, or Alaska SkyWest, under contract to the major airline on the ticket. They typically fly shorter routes with simpler turnarounds than a mainline carrier's own schedule, which leaves more buffer to absorb a late inbound aircraft — the same effect covered in FlightRecord's piece on late-arriving aircraft delays. That advantage shows up clearly below: at five of the eight airports, a regional partner's on-time rate beats every mainline carrier reported at that same airport.

Envoy Air, flying DFW routes as American Eagle, is the clear standout at 82.7% on-time across about 131,800 flights — more than 10 points above the airport average, and ahead of United (80.9%, about 18,600 flights) and Delta (80.1%, about 24,000 flights) at the same airport.
